China and the U.S. can step away from confrontation and “must do so” as the international community does not want to be forced to choose sides between the world’s two largest economies, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said Monday at Caixin’s inaugural Asia New Vision Forum.

At the event, which took place in Singapore, Heng also urged Asia and other regions to strengthen cooperation in three areas — upholding an open and rules-based trade framework, promoting greater flows of financial resources and tackling common challenges in areas such as global health issues and climate change.
