The best way to become a better writer is to write more. The best way to write more is to write every day. The best way to write every day is to think like a cartoonist.
Whether you’ve never made a comic in your life or have been cranking out panels for years, learning the art of the self-contained comic strip will make you a better writer or cartoonist. The rudimentary tools of executing a daily comic—how to communicate a sequence of ideas, the art of being concise, the ability to tell a joke—are the fundamentals of all excellent writing. Participants in this workshop will learn to think, write, edit, and draw like daily cartoonists. We’ll read and discuss classic comic strips as well as contemporary graphic novels and collections. We’ll kill our inner critics, commit to our practice, make lots of comics, and become obsessive maniacs in pursuit of an art form that will never earn us any money.
With commitment, a one-page, six-panel comic can be completed every day. In this class, we’ll learn how to do it.
How to Think Like a Caroonist is a 6-week-long workshop with cartoonist Nathan Gelgud. Each participant will be able to submit completed comics, scripts for comics, or rough outlines for detailed review and feedback. One on one meetings are also available.
No previous drawing experience is required!
