Editorial Policy
Submissions & Pitches
LARB welcomes submissions and pitches for original essays, criticism, and interviews. We cover literature, film & television, history, science, politics, art, architecture, and more. We do not publish texts that have previously appeared elsewhere in any capacity.
To pitch us, please use the pitch form here or contact the appropriate editor on the Masthead. For general questions about the editorial process or to submit a letter to the editor, please contact editorial (at) lareviewofbooks.org.
Please keep emails and pitches concise.
If pitching a review, include relevant details (title, author/artist, publication/release date). We receive a lot of pitches, and we are a very small editorial team, so we unfortunately cannot respond to all of them.
The best guide for prospective contributors is our vast online archive: we encourage you to familiarize yourself with our coverage in the relevant field or genre.
Editorial Process
All pitches are accepted on spec. Once a draft has been submitted, the assigning editor will work with the writer directly, providing developmental edits as well as line edits, as necessary. Once a piece is finished, it may also be subject to a top edit by senior editorial staff. All pieces go through a thorough copyediting, fact-checking, and quote-checking process. LARB reserves the right to pull a piece from publication at any point during the editorial process.
LARB aims for quality over speed. Our editorial timeline depends on the timeliness of the subject, the publication calendar, and the capacity of our small staff.
Our standard rate for essays and reviews for online publication is $100 to $200, depending on length and breadth of coverage, as well as financial need. The standard rate for print publication is $150 to $300.
As a 501(c)(3), we are also happy to work with writers on obtaining grants or fellowships to support their work.
